KLIM X1 Pinlock Lens 120 XLT Clear

Setting off in the cold at sunrise, or riding through the rain for hours to your next stop for the night? Then you want your visor to stay clear. The KLIM X1 Pinlock Lens 120 XLT is KLIM's clear Pinlock insert for the face shields of the X1 Alpha, KLIM's adventure helmet. It sits on the inside of the shield and works all year round, from hot and humid summer days to wet, cold spells.

Two face shields, two inserts KLIM supplies the X1 Alpha with a clear and a photochromic face shield, plus one Pinlock insert matched to this helmet. According to KLIM, the X1 Alpha face shields are compatible with a Pinlock 120 XLT. With this spare you can equip your second shield as well, so you swap shields on the road without moving the insert across. And when your insert has picked up scratches after many miles, this is its replacement.

How it keeps your shield clear A Pinlock works on two principles. The surface of the lens attracts and holds moisture, and the airtight silicone seal forms a thermal barrier together with the shield. That stops the humid air inside your helmet from condensing on the cold shield. You notice it when you crawl up a rocky section, or when you stop to check the route and your breath hits the shield.

Level 120, day and night According to Pinlock, level 120 delivers advanced anti-fog performance for unpredictable weather. XLT lets more light through across the whole visible spectrum, so colours look brighter and more natural. Pinlock states that XLT lenses can be used by day and at night under the ECE 22.06 helmet standard. KLIM says the X1 Alpha's Pinlock keeps optical class 1 clarity and the huge field of view intact.

Fitting it the KLIM way Remove the face shield from the helmet, which takes no tools on the X1 Alpha, and make sure it is clean. On each side of the shield is a small plastic pin that the Pinlock locates into. Peel the protective film off the insert, carefully place each end into the pin on either side and press the edges against the shield so the insert seals properly. To remove it, reverse the process.

Adjustment and care The X1 uses One Component Pins. If the silicone seal does not touch the shield all the way round, take the insert out, pull the pins outwards slightly and turn them with your fingers, in steps of no more than 45 degrees. To clean it, take the insert out of the shield, rinse insert and shield with mineral water only, remove any remaining marks with a clean, wet microfibre cloth and let everything dry upright. Store a spare insert somewhere dark, dry and dust-free in a soft cloth or plastic bag, because the surface scratches easily.
