Do you stop often for a photo, fuel or a border, and then close your visor again in the cold? Then a visor that does not fog up is no luxury. The KLIM GT1 Pinlock Lens 120 XLT is KLIM's replacement Pinlock insert for the face shield of the GT1 Expedition, KLIM's modular helmet. It sits on the inside of the shield and keeps your view clear in rain and cold.

Two face shields, two inserts KLIM supplies the GT1 Expedition with a clear and a photochromic face shield, plus one Pinlock insert matched to this helmet. According to KLIM, both face shields keep optical class 1 clarity, even with the Pinlock installed. With this extra insert you can fit one in each shield, so you swap shields on the road without moving the insert across. The shield comes off the GT1 without tools. A worn or scratched insert is replaced just as easily.

How it keeps your shield clear A Pinlock works on two principles. The surface of the lens attracts and holds moisture, and the airtight silicone seal forms a thermal barrier together with the shield. That stops the humid air inside your helmet from condensing on the cold shield, even when you pull away in the rain after a stop with the chin bar and shield closed.

Wide, clear view According to Pinlock, level 120 delivers advanced anti-fog performance for unpredictable weather. This is also a MaxVision insert: it sits in a dedicated recess in the shield and becomes part of it, so as much of your field of view as possible stays fog-free. XLT lets more light through across the whole visible spectrum, so colours look brighter and more natural. Pinlock states that XLT lenses can be used by day and at night under the ECE 22.06 helmet standard.

Fitting and adjusting Remove the face shield from the helmet and check that the arrows on the Pinlock pins point outwards. Flex the shield slightly, place the insert between the two pins and check in daylight that the silicone seal touches the shield all the way round. Then peel the protective film off the insert and clip the shield back on. If the seal is not tight everywhere, turn the pins 45 degrees towards the helmet. The GT1 uses Two Component Pins, which you adjust with a flat screwdriver or a bank card.

Care on the road Take the insert out of the shield and rinse both with mineral water only. Gently remove any remaining marks with a clean, wet microfibre cloth. Let both dry upright in the open air before you put them back together. The surface scratches easily, so keep a spare insert in a soft cloth or plastic bag, somewhere dark, dry and free of dust.
