How do you keep your hands warm when your bike has no connection for your gloves, or when you're on and off the bike all day? The Gerbing Xtreme 12V Battery Kit gives your Gerbing Xtreme heated gloves a power source of their own. You get two rechargeable 12V batteries and a charger, one battery for each glove.

Free of cables Plugged into your bike's battery, your gloves stay warm for as long as you ride, but you can't always use that connection, or don't want to. Think of a rental bike on a trip far from home, an off-road day when you keep stopping to walk a section or scout a tricky stretch, or a break that takes you a long way from the bike. With the batteries in your gloves' battery pockets, the heat simply stays on. Each battery weighs about 140 grams and measures 7 by 5.5 by 1.8 centimetres.

How long you stay warm You control the heat with the button on your gloves, which has three settings. The colour of the light shows which setting is on, and the highest setting can be locked. According to Gerbing, a full battery gives up to 7 hours of heat on blue (33%), up to 4 hours on orange (66%) and up to 2 hours on red (100%). If you start the day cold, turn the gloves up for a while and back down once your hands are warm. That way a charge lasts longer. In severe cold, lithium-ion batteries deliver less capacity, especially when they sit unprotected in the wind. Expect somewhat shorter times then.

The full power of 12V The batteries run at 11.1 volts, with Samsung cells and a capacity of 2600 mAh (28.86 Wh) each. Because they are 12V batteries, you can use all three settings on your gloves. On Gerbing's 7V batteries, some Xtreme models such as the XRL and the Ladies glove only go up to the middle setting.

Which gloves it fits The kit only works with Gerbing's Xtreme gloves, the models with a push button on the glove and a battery pocket. It fits the Xtreme Air and the Xtreme COSMO, for example.

Charging and care Charge the batteries with the supplied charger, for example in the evening at your hotel or campsite. Lights on the battery show how much charge is left, so you know where you stand in the morning. A battery lasts for up to about 500 charges, and you get the most out of it by never running it completely flat and keeping it above roughly a quarter of its charge. If your gloves sit unused for a while, charge the batteries at least once a month. Looking after them this way saves money and waste.
